Blue Skies Film

The Power of music in communities

In 2016 we were approached by David from Mill Productions saying they would like to make a film about community music and thought of us! That was the start of a very exciting project that came to fruition in 2017.

We planned… and discussed… and rehearsed… and everyone became involved raising the necessary funds… and the end result is stunning, even if we do say so ourselves!

The aim of the film was to share true stories of the power of music in the lives of ordinary people.

Some of our members spoke of the ways in which music, and belonging to a choir or orchestra, has helped them through challenging life transitions and given them a new purpose.

We chose to call the project ‘Blue Skies’ as it followed the theme of other Cantata ‘epics’; notably Noye’s Fludde (featuring a rainbow) which led to us establishing Poynton Community Orchestra (this project was entitled ‘Beyond the Rainbow’) and eventually to the Blue Skies experiences of our members who have come through some storms of life and are now appreciating the blue skies beyond the rain.

The film culminates with a wonderful rendition of our Cantata anthem, ‘Family in Song’, recorded in the beautiful setting of St George’s Church, Poynton.

We also have a DVD of the film available for £10. The film is just over half an hour long, so sit down with a brew and enjoy!

If you would like to purchase a DVD copy of the film, please contact us.

We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who helped in the process of bringing this film to fruition – from fundraisers to film-makers – a big THANK YOU from everyone here at Cantata.
