Poynton Community Orchestra

Learn more about the Poynton Community Orchestra.

Poynton Community Orchestra gives adult musicians from Grades I to V standard the opportunity to play alongside like-minded players in a fun and non-threatening environment. We have great fun on Saturday mornings at St Martin’s Church, Shrigley Road North, Poynton, SK12TE.

If you don’t want the pressure of playing in a “more advanced” orchestra, or you haven’t played your instrument in years and fancy getting back to it; or maybe you’ve taken up an instrument later in life and never had the opportunity to play in an orchestra? Well, this is the orchestra for you.

We generally meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 10.00am—11.30am. However, this is not always the case, so it’s best to get in touch with us first so we know what instrument you’ll be bringing and can confirm the dates with you.

The orchestra is under the very capable baton of Poynton musician Nigel Jay. Nigel, an experienced musician and conductor, is very patient with us as he leads us through each piece until we end up making a pretty decent sound!

Born in Ipswich, Nigel left school early to study at NEETC, Colchester and whilst there he had the opportunity to work with the Aldeburgh Festival Singers. He then went on to the Royal Academy of Music to study violin, viola and piano.

After further study in Germany and Italy, Nigel joined the D’Oyly Carte Opera as sub-leader and repetiteur. He also worked with Scottish Opera and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra before joining the BBC Philharmonic as well as being leader of the Oriana Quartet for many years.

Closer to home, Nigel conducted the orchestras at Poynton Music Academy for several years and can also be found performing at local events with his wife Pam on the accordion and calling themselves The Gypsy Jays.
